Challenge and Resistance
Grade 11 Islamic History examines the pivotal period when European powers colonized and partitioned the Muslim world, fundamentally altering the political, economic, and social landscape of Islamic civilizations. Students learn about the decline of the Ottoman Empire, European colonization of North Africa and the Middle East, the partition of India, and the imposition of Western political systems on Muslim-majority regions. The curriculum emphasizes Muslim responses to colonialism—from resistance movements and nationalist uprisings to intellectual and religious reformations.
Through balanced historical analysis and primary sources, students discover how Muslim thinkers and leaders responded to Western dominance, how colonialism extracted resources and disrupted traditional societies, and how the seeds of modern conflict were sown through arbitrary borders and foreign intervention. Students learn about reform movements, nationalist leaders, and the complex legacy of colonialism, preparing them to understand contemporary geopolitical tensions and the ongoing struggles for self-determination in the Muslim world.
